Rock paintings of Capçanes
The rock art ensemble of the Mediterranean basin of the Iberian Peninsula comprises 757 sites with paintings, and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. It is the largest group of rock art sites in Europe.
One of the least-known and, at the same time, most fascinating elements of the Priorat's heritage is its rock paintings and the mark left there by the first humans in very remote times. The valleys of Capçanes hold a treasure of rock paintings, a benchmark for their uniqueness and their number: they represent the largest concentration of paintings –within a 2 km radius– in the whole country.
It is a group of 19 sites located in three ravines on the way to the Serra de Llaberia, of great artistic quality and surprising –even to the experts themselves– for their subject matter. One example is the mural known as "La matança" (The Slaughter), a dynamic scene of a human massacre that is a real rarity in Levantine art.
We look forward to showing you what the oldest voices of our past have to tell us, in one of the most beautiful settings in Catalonia. A rigorous, fascinating and playful visit, suitable for all audiences, that brings together art, culture, nature, landscape and, for sure, a few surprises you won't expect.
