Charterhouse of Santa Maria d'Escaladei

The Escaladei Charterhouse was founded in 1194 when King Alfonso I granted these lands to the Carthusian order, given the need to repopulate the territory. The order gained importance and even enjoyed royal protection, which allowed it to expand to a total of 3 cloisters and 30 cells.

With the Mendizábal confiscations of 1835 the Carthusians had to abandon the monastery, which was set on fire and almost completely destroyed. Escaladei was the first charterhouse on the Iberian Peninsula.
