Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Santes Creus
One of the largest and best-preserved Cistercian monastic complexes that can be visited today. Founded in 1168 and protected by the nobility and kings, it became a spiritual and learning centre and a driving force in the settlement of the territory, and monastic life continued here without interruption until 1835.
More information
The church, with its sober and imposing architecture, holds the royal tombs of Peter the Great and James II and his wife Blanche of Anjou, as well as that of the great admiral Roger of Lauria. You can also admire the Cistercian and Gothic stained glass and a Baroque altarpiece by Josep de Tremulles. The staged audiovisual display "The World of the Cistercians", considered among the best of its kind in Europe, gives a very complete and fascinating idea of the Order and its legacy.
