1. From river to river, a cultural route along Tarragona's green ring
Want to discover the Roman past of Tarragona on wheels? Here is a route that lets you do just that! From the Francolí to the Gaià. The idea of linking the two rivers that flow out at Tarragona has produced a great excursion that shows off the great heritage of the municipality. You pass beneath the Roman aqueduct, medieval farmhouses, Modernista domes, defence towers against the dreaded pirates, quarries with needle-shaped rock pillars, vegetable gardens, river mouths full of life, villages that look like castles, coves where the pines still come down to bathe, and the remains of coastguard huts where couples once sat looking at the horizon together, without being in love. The full route is 34 km. The outward leg to the Gaià can be done on foot or by bike. A good idea is to do the route in stages and use public transport (city bus or train) to return.

Route description
Route type: Circular route
Start and finish: Francolí River Park (Tarragona)
Distance: 34 km
Duration: 3 hours
Points of interest: On this route you will find the Devil's Bridge and the great Roman aqueduct. Near the sea you will also find the fortified village of Tamarit, which looks more like a castle than a village, and recalls the centuries when the Catalan coast suffered attacks from pirate ships. You will also pass beautiful beaches such as La Móra beach, Els Capellans beach and the Punta del Miracle.
The great thing about this route is that you will pass beautiful beaches and coves. From Platja Llarga to the small beach of Els Capellans, which connects with Savinosa beach. If it is hot, you have no excuse not to take a good dip!
This route takes us past the old fortified village of Tamarit, which recalls the centuries when the Catalan coast suffered raids by pirates from North Africa. We recommend a picnic along this stretch of coast, where you will also find the remains of a coastguard hut.
Shall we discover the place where gigantic stones were quarried to build the most emblematic buildings of Roman Tarragona? If you fancy an adventure, you can become a real Indiana Jones and touch the stones and, above all, the needle-shaped block of stone 16 metres high, a witness to the original coastline where quarrying began.
