Castle-Monastery of Sant Miquel d'Escornalbou
Escornalbou takes us back to a time when the wealthy bourgeoisie converted old historic buildings into their residences. In 1911, Eduard Toda bought the old monastery of Sant Miquel d'Escornalbou and restored it with complete freedom.

The visit lets us experience the atmosphere of a wealthy home in the early 20th century, where the leading figures of the Renaixença gathered at Toda's invitation. The various rooms hold examples of the collections Toda had assembled on his travels. Vice-consul in Macau, Hong Kong and Shanghai, and consul in Egypt, he used these experiences to get to know different cultures, especially Egyptian. Founded in 1153, the monastery of Sant Miquel d'Escornalbou was the centre of the barony that brought together the villages of Duesaigües, Riudecanyes, Vilanova d'Escornalbou, l'Argentera, Colldejou, Pradell de la Teixeta and la Torre de Fontaubella. Toda preserved some of its elements, such as the church and the cloister, although he remodelled the latter into a garden from which to enjoy one of the finest views in the Tarragona region.
The Diputació de Tarragona, in coordination with the Generalitat de Catalunya, is currently carrying out an ambitious project to restore the dignity of the Escornalbou Castle-Monastery and its natural surroundings, in 3 phases, funded by European and state funds.
The guided tour of the interior of the monument is closed for works until further notice.
