At the foot of the Prades mountains, one of the inland mountain ranges of the Costa Daurada, certified as a Family Tourism Destination, lies the municipality of Alcover. Its museum, the Museu d'Alcover, has gathered the historical legacy of the municipality and its surroundings in a space that brings together a range of collections. From numismatics to ethnography, archaeology and works of art, and, without a doubt, with a major and central role for palaeontology. Coming from the fossil site of Alcover and Mont-ral, the museum stands out for its more than 2,000 fossil specimens that tell the remote past of these lands.
In the former attic of the building you can visit the exhibition 'Triàsic, explosió de vida' (Triassic, an Explosion of Life), where you will see what the Prades mountains and their immediate surroundings were like 240 million years ago, thanks to the remains of the fossilised marine animals found there. An ideal exhibition to visit as a family, with the activities and workshops programmed around 'Triàsic en família'. In the same museum, now on the main floor, you can visit the exhibition 'Ca Batistó, modernitat burgesa' (Ca Batistó, Bourgeois Modernity) to find out what bourgeois society and thinking were like in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, a space that also gives a very carefully considered voice to women and bourgeois feminism.
We head out into the street to tour the town on the guided visit 'Bandolers, pedres i palaus' (Bandits, Stones and Palaces), where the memory of the town speaks for itself. An interesting itinerary through the various stages that today's Alcover has known and lived. One of these stages is led by bands of fugitives and bandits, who today have their space of remembrance at the Fira de Bandolers, held every year during the first half of October. With live performances, activities, food corners, talks, a craft market and concerts, you can immerse yourself in this period and relive it.
On arriving in Alcover, heading towards the small hill of Calvari, you will see the Convent de les Arts, a building firmly rooted in the area. In the past it has served different purposes, and today it hosts a range of high-quality cultural events: live arts, visual arts, cinema and, in short, every cultural expression that enriches both the space and its visitors.
