City Walls and Archaeological Walk
Originally made of wood, the stone wall was built in the 2nd century BC and was the first great architectural work of Tarraco. It is now the oldest Roman-built structure preserved outside Italy.

More information
It was 3,500 metres long, of which only 1,100 metres survive, with tall defensive towers, among them the Archbishop's Tower and the Tower of Minerva, which bears the oldest Roman sculpture and inscription on the Iberian Peninsula. Between the 16th and 18th centuries it was reinforced to adapt it to wars and pirate attacks. Today the wall surrounds the old town. The City Walls and Archaeological Walk are managed by the Tarragona History Museum and are part of the archaeological ensemble of Roman Tarraco, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
