Provincial Forum and Roman Circus
The Roman Circus of Tarragona was built in the 1st century for chariot and horse racing and is estimated to have held some 30,000 spectators. It was built inside the city, between the Via Augusta and the Provincial Forum, which gave it special architectural features.
More information
It is considered one of the best-preserved Roman circuses in the West, although its structure still lies hidden beneath the buildings of the upper part of the city. The Praetorium is a Roman-era tower that housed the access from the lower city to the Provincial Forum via the Circus. In the 16th century the Praetorium became the palace of the kings of the Crown of Aragon and later a prison. The Roman Circus and Praetorium are managed by the Tarragona History Museum and are part of the archaeological ensemble of Roman Tarraco, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The ticket is a combined one and covers both sites.
