More information
Unusually, it was built outside the city so that the rock could be used for the seating. It could hold 14,000 spectators. In the year 259, Bishop Fructuosus and his deacons Augurius and Eulogius were burned alive here, and for that reason a basilica dedicated to these martyrs was built on the site in the early 6th century. In the 12th century the church of Santa Maria del Miracle was built over it.
The Amphitheatre is managed by the Tarragona History Museum.
