Agrícola de Barberà de la Conca
Pioneers and inspirers. The origin of our agricultural cooperativism. In the town that saw the birth of the first cooperative winery experience in all of Spain, Cèsar Martinell built the building, located south of the town and by the roadside, between 1920 and 1921, commissioned by the viticulture section of the Sindicat Agrícola de Barberà, with financial help from the Banc de Valls.
More information
His project incorporated four major technical innovations (in both construction and wine-production technology) that became hallmarks of his work in almost all his wineries. These hallmarks are: the construction of the structure of the naves based on parabolic brick arches, the placement of windows to ventilate the naves, cylindrical underground vats separated by ventilated insulating chambers, and the composition and textures of the façades.
The building consists of two rectangular naves of unequal size arranged in parallel, with different tiled roofs on wooden trusses and an interior resolved at the sides with lightened parabolic arches of brick laid in the "book-fold" (plec de llibre) style.
The main body has a basilica plan and contains the surface vats. The interior pillars branch out lengthwise and form parabolic arches.
Especially curious is the water tank tower (built in 1929), whose structure and shape resemble the town's Baroque bell tower, with which it establishes a certain dialogue and mimicry.
Finally, note the long underground corridor that crosses the main nave and carefully safeguards hundreds of bottles of the winery's cava.
