Pere Mata Institute
In 1898 construction began on the Pere Mata psychiatric institute, one of the great projects of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, which marked the start of the brilliant Modernista period that the city of Reus experienced. From then on, Domènech built other buildings here and the spirit of Modernisme spread strongly throughout the city.

The Pere Mata Institute, built on a pavilion-complex plan, was the precursor of the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona and is now considered one of the jewels of Modernisme.
The "pavilion of the distinguished" is, for its ornamental richness, the one of greatest artistic value in the whole hospital complex, as it preserves the spectacular decorative repertoire of Modernisme. It is the only pavilion that can be visited and various cultural events are held there.
